Supporting this coffee supports the upskilling program designed to place female Congolese coffee farmers in the quality and business side of the coffee industry. Mapendo Women came about by UKAID and its mission to increase the income of at least 100,000 people across various industries in the DRC. By focusing on and creating a line of distinctly female-farmed coffee, it helped proactively launch a way to help woman-owned and led coffee farms see an increase in the benefits of their work.
Charlotte Fikiri, VP of Mapendo Women, has been in the coffee industry for over 12 years. She started as a farmer, and the increases in her income through coffee have helped her and her family grow. As she says, "Women have an important role to play across the entire coffee value chain," in each stage of the coffee production and sales process. Focusing on increased economic security will lead to more autonomy and power for these Congolese women.
